STOP THE SOUTH TAHOE VACANCY TAX

Vote No on the Vacancy Tax

We all want to address housing affordability in South Tahoe, but this measure is not the answer, and will likely make things worse.

BROKEN PROMISES ON HOUSING.

MASSIVE TAX INCREASE.

HUGE NEW BUREAUCRACY.

INVASION OF PRIVACY.

Here’s What it Does

BROKEN PROMISES ON HOUSING – After all the promises from the backers of this measure, voters will be shocked to hear that nothing in this proposal requires the City to produce a single new unit of affordable housing, or even to spend a single penny on housing affordability at all.

MASSIVE TAX INCREASE – This measure is a $34 million tax increase on housing in South Lake Tahoe. The City’s current budget is only a little over $50 million, so it’s a nearly 70% increase in the City budget.

HUGE NEW BUREAUCRACY – There are over 16,000 housing units in South Lake Tahoe, and the City would have to set up a huge new bureaucracy to keep track of each of these units.

INVASION OF PRIVACY – This measure assumes each homeowner and tenant is guilty of leaving their home vacant, and you have to prove to the City you occupied your home at least 183 days each year. And the city can go back up to five years and audit you, forcing you to come up with records to prove how many days you were home.
